Pecha Kucha instructions

Last update: 17-05-2010

In the DRN 2010 symposium, special attention is given to PhD researchers. They give their presentation in the so-called Pecha Kucha format, followed by discussion of the presented work.

Instructions

For this set of presentations we use the format of Pecha Kucha. Each presenter gets an exact time available and presents a fixed number of slides.

The number is 20 slides, each visible for 20 seconds, leading to a total presentation time of 6 minutes and 40 seconds. During the presentation, the slides run automatically, i.e., the presenter has no control over the mouse. After a sequence of speakers, there is a break, and time for questions. This format requires the presenter to be clear, brief, and to the point; it also creates goodwill in the audience, who know exactly how long the presentation lasts.

Attached is a template for the presentations (DRN2010 template.ppt - 341 KB), already set up for Pecha Kucha format (20 slides with automatic transition, and recognizable DRN2010 logo (DRN2010_Logo_240.jpg) on slides 1 and 20). Please use this format to prepare your presentation.

If, however, you want to use a different format powerpoint presentation, you are free to create your own, but please use the DRN2010 logo attached prominently on the first and last slides as a marker for yourself and the audience. Make sure your presentation has 20 slides, and has 'automatic transitions,' which you can set up with the instructions below.

As a general rule, it is advised to keep each slide visible for exactly 20 seconds; if you want a specific slide to be shown for longer, use two slides with the same content.

If you need special effects, such as video, please prepare your presentation to contain the movie, again self-running if possible. If you have questions, please contact us.

Want to see an example Pecha kucha conference session, to get a feel for the dynamics?
Last year, at the symposium "Design for, with, and from user experiences," a series of 10 pecha kucha presentations (of only 12 slides each!) was held, in which alumni related their experience with design research techniques. To demarcate the breaks, each presentation started with a timeline diagram.

You can find the video of the presentation on:

To watch the pecha kucha, skip the intro and move to slide 12 of 132 (after 8 minutes 20 seconds).

Background information on Pecha kucha in general
Actually, for those who read Dutch, the entry in the Dutch version of Wikipedia is quite concise:
