The fourth Design Research in the Netherlands 2010 symposium will take place on Thursday-Friday 20-21 May 2010 at Eindhoven University of Technology. The symposium is open to everyone who has an interest how to research design. It spans over the disciplines, and includes among others, architecture, industrial design, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, aerospatial engineering, and so on. Participants from universities and hogescholen are encouraged to participate and submit their overview papers. A special focus in this symposium edition will be on PhD students who are engaged in design research. PhD students can submit position papers on their research. These will be commented by a selected group of senior researchers and presented at the symposium in a Pecha Kucha session. |
Each group position paper has presentation time of 30 minutes, including questions. Please provide for some transmission time between presentations. To make sure there are no problems with presentations, you can email us your presentation in advance (drn.@.tue.nl - leave out the dots around @).
Each PhD position paper takes the format of a Pecha kucha presentation. A Pecha kucha presentation is a short presentation of 20 slides of 20 seconds each with automatic transmission (no mouse allowed!). Please follow the instructions and example template provided here.

DRN 2010 is held in the Dorgelo Zaal of the
Traverse Building. It is indicated on the campus map as "TR." General information how to reach TU
Eindhoven can be found on the website: http://w3.tue.nl/en/the_university/route_and_map/ Walking from the train station to the symposium site takes about 10-15 minutes. |
Design Research in the Netherlands occurs every five years to take stock
of the state-of-the-art in design research that takes place in all design
disciplines in the Netherlands. How has our understanding of design
developed through research on this phenomenon? What are the research and
development methodologies used to acquire insight in design? What have we
achieved in the past period, and what are our expectations for the coming
period? We invite researchers and research groups to outline their
development over the past five years in position papers, addressing
insights, methods, results, and problems.
Design Research in the Netherlands 2010 will be the fourth edition,
following three symposia held in 1995, 2000, and 2005. The five-year cycle
allows us to take conceptual distance from everyday problems that are often
project-specific, and to assess how our field is evolving. We have seen new
research programmes start, novel technologies and methods introduced, as
well as the organisational dynamics of research groups in their
institutions.
DRN 2010 invites you to submit a position paper (twelve pages, see new guidelines for final paper submission) about your groups/institutions work of the past five years concerning design research. The position paper should at least contain an overview of the most significant research projects and findings, a list of key publications, and the major themes that inform and guide the research work. For examples, please refer to the proceedings of the previous symposia (available full-text online 1995, 2000, and 2005). In the position papers we are looking specifically at clarity of argument and whether the research issues and findings are well expressed. The position paper needs to take a reflective stance on the work that has been achieved in the past period. Please view the paper as a reference document for others to gain an insight in the work of you and your team.
During the DRN 2010 symposium the thursday afternoon session is reserved for PhD students involved in design research. DRN 2010 invites PhD students to write a short position paper (six pages, see new guidelines for final paper submission) about your work among one of the themes identified below. Your position paper will be reviewed by a senior researcher. At the symposium you will present your work in pecha kucha sessions. Please follow the guidelines for Pecha kucha presentation included here. Accepted position papers will be included in the proceedings.
For creation and submission of your position paper, please follow the new guidelines.

The keynote speaker at the conference will be John Habraken. In 1962 he published 'Supports, an Alternative to Mass
Housing' in which he proposed the separation of 'support' or base building from 'infill' or interior fit-out in
residential construction and design. He was director of SAR (Foundation for Architects Research) in the
Netherlands, 1965 to 1975, where he lead research into and development of methods for the design and construction
of adaptable housing. In 1967 he was appointed professor at Eindhoven Technical University to set up its new
Department of Architecture and serve as its first chairperson. From 1975-1981 he was Head of the Department of
Architecture at MIT, Cambridge, MA, where he taught untill his retirement in 1989. Additionally, he served in a
partnership for the invention and development of an infill system for residential construction from 1987 till
1997. John Habraken has received worldwide recognition. He was recipient of the 1988 Creative Achievement Award of the Association of Collegiate Schools in the US; the David Roëll prize 1979 of the Dutch Prince Bernhard Fund, The King Fahd award for design and research in Islamic Architecture, 1985-86, and the Oevre Award for 1996 of the National Foundation for Art, design, and Architecture (BKVB oevre prijs) in the Netherlands. He is Honorary Member of the Architectural Institute of Japan, and Knight of the Royal Order of the Dutch Lion 2003, recipient of the 2003 “Kubus for advancing the standing of Architecture”, by the BNA, Dutch Association of Architects, and Doctor Honoris Causa from the Technical University Eindhoven 2005. |
The following dates are important to keep in mind:
Registration for the conference is 125 euro.
